MHT-CET

JEE Main vs MHT-CET: Which Should a Maharashtra Science Student Prioritise?

A side-by-side comparison of JEE Main and MHT-CET — pattern, marking, difficulty, colleges and timing — and a practical way to prepare for both.

Key takeaways

  • JEE Main (NTA) leads to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and is the gateway to JEE Advanced for the IITs.
  • MHT-CET (State CET Cell) is the main route to engineering and pharmacy colleges in Maharashtra.
  • JEE Main has negative marking and multi-concept problems; MHT-CET has no negative marking and rewards speed on the State Board syllabus.
  • Most Maharashtra PCM students should take both: prepare deep for JEE, then add speed practice for CET.

Which exam is harder?

JEE Main is generally considered harder because its questions combine multiple concepts, require longer solutions and carry negative marking. MHT-CET questions are more direct, but you have to answer 100 Physics–Chemistry questions in 90 minutes, so speed and accuracy decide your score.

Should I prepare for both?

For most PCM students in Maharashtra, yes. The core syllabus overlaps heavily, so JEE-level concept depth makes CET questions feel easier. The extra work for CET is mainly:

  • covering State Board-specific topics that JEE treats lightly (or vice versa),
  • building speed through timed MCQ sets, and
  • getting used to answering every question, since CET has no negative marking.

Frequently asked questions

Is JEE Main tougher than MHT-CET?

Generally yes. JEE Main has multi-concept questions and negative marking, while MHT-CET has more direct questions, no negative marking and tighter time per question.

Can I get into a good engineering college in Maharashtra without JEE?

Yes. Most engineering colleges in Maharashtra admit students through MHT-CET. JEE Main is needed for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, and for JEE Advanced (IITs).

Is the MHT-CET syllabus the same as JEE Main?

They overlap heavily in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, but MHT-CET follows the Maharashtra State Board syllabus with about 80% weightage on Class 12, while JEE Main follows the national syllabus across Class 11 and 12.

Should CBSE students in Pune take MHT-CET?

Yes, if they want admission to Maharashtra colleges. They should cover State Board-specific topics and practise CET-style timed papers.
