What are the JEE Main 2027 exam dates?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has scheduled JEE Main 2027 Session 1 on 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027, and Session 2 on 2–7 April 2027. Registration for Session 1 opened on 24 October 2026 and closes on 22 November 2026; Session 2 needs a separate application that NTA will notify later. Exams run in two shifts: 9 am–12 noon and 3 pm–6 pm.
| Milestone (Session 1) | Date |
|---|---|
| Online registration | 24 October – 22 November 2026 |
| Late fee window (₹500) | 23 – 26 November 2026 |
| Application correction | 27 – 29 November 2026 |
| Exam city intimation slip | 30 December 2026 |
| Admit card | From 13 January 2027 |
| Exam days | 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027 |
| Session 2 exam | 2 – 7 April 2027 (separate application) |
What is the JEE Main 2027 exam pattern?
JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) is a 3-hour computer-based test with 75 questions — 25 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — for a total of 300 marks. Each subject has 20 multiple-choice questions (Section A) and 5 numerical-value questions (Section B). There is no longer a choice in Section B: all five numericals are compulsory.
| Feature | JEE Main 2027 Paper 1 |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-based test (CBT) |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Questions | 75 (25 per subject: 20 MCQ + 5 numerical) |
| Total marks | 300 (100 per subject) |
| Correct answer | +4 |
| Wrong answer | −1 (MCQs and numericals) |
| Unanswered | 0 |
What this means for strategy: because numerical answers now carry negative marking too, guessing on Section B is risky. Practise numericals until you are confident of the method, and leave a question rather than enter a random number.
Who can take JEE Main 2027?
Students who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or who are appearing for Class 12 in 2027, are eligible. Those who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not. There is no age limit. If you appear in both sessions, your better NTA score is used for ranking. The top 2,50,000 candidates (across categories) in JEE Main Paper 1 become eligible for JEE Advanced, which allows a maximum of two attempts in consecutive years.
Admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes also involves Class 12 performance criteria set during counselling. Check the current rules on JoSAA before you plan around them.
A 90-day JEE Main plan (late October to mid-January)
If you are in 12th today, you have about 12 weeks until Session 1, with your Class 12 board exam not far behind. The plan below assumes 4–5 hours of focused self-study on school days and more on weekends.
| Weeks | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 (late Oct – Nov) | Consolidate | Finish any pending 12th chapters. Revise your weakest 11th chapters (commonly difficult ones include Rotational Motion, Thermodynamics, General Organic Chemistry and Sequences & Series). One chapter test per subject each week. |
| 5–8 (Dec) | Mixed practice | Solve mixed-chapter sets daily (30 questions, timed). Two full-length mocks per week. Maintain an error notebook by chapter. |
| 9–11 (late Dec – mid-Jan) | Exam simulation | Three full mocks per week at the real exam time (9 am or 3 pm). Revise formula sheets and the error notebook. No new chapters. |
| Final week | Taper | One light mock, revision only, fixed sleep schedule, check admit card and centre route. |
Subject-wise priorities
- Mathematics: speed comes from method, not memory. Practise calculus and coordinate geometry daily; they reward fluency.
- Physics: focus on concept clarity first, then problem types. Re-derive key results rather than memorising formulas.
- Chemistry: NCERT-level Inorganic Chemistry is the most score-efficient revision; pair it with regular Physical Chemistry numericals.
Balancing JEE with the HSC or CBSE board exam
The Maharashtra HSC written exams are tentatively scheduled from 8 February to 16 March 2027, with practicals from 20 January — right after JEE Session 1. Plan a two-week board-focused window after Session 1, then return to JEE practice for Session 2 in April. Our HSC 12th study plan covers the board side in detail. Frequently asked questions
When is JEE Main 2027 Session 1?
According to NTA, JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is scheduled for 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027, with two shifts each day (9 am–12 noon and 3 pm–6 pm).
What is the last date to apply for JEE Main 2027 Session 1?
Online registration closes on 22 November 2026 (till 11:50 pm). A late-fee window runs from 23 to 26 November 2026.
Is there negative marking for numerical questions in JEE Main 2027?
Yes. As per the JEE Main 2027 Information Bulletin, both multiple-choice and numerical-value questions carry +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong answer. Unanswered questions get zero.
Are numerical questions optional in JEE Main 2027?
No. Each subject has 5 numerical-value questions in Section B and all of them are compulsory.
How many attempts are allowed for JEE Main?
Students can appear in the year they pass Class 12 and the next two years, with two sessions each year. If you take both sessions in a year, the better score is used.
Can I prepare for JEE Main and MHT-CET together?
Yes. Both test Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from the Class 11–12 syllabus. JEE needs deeper problem-solving; MHT-CET rewards speed and has no negative marking. Practise both formats in the final months.
